The damp and musty air filled Avaâs nose. The dark cell with its stone walls and iron bars had been her home for weeks, even longer if you accounted for the days sheâd been unconscious. She was weak; her strength seemed to never come back to her. Every day was the same. She would sleep until one of the mages, in their black robes, woke her. They would feed her a bowl of gruel and give her a mug of water. Twice a day they fed her. Each time they would say nothing. They just silently would watch her eat and then turn and leave.
The outer doors opened. Ava frowned. Her head hurt and she was groggy, but she knew it wasnât time for the second meal. The mages had never before broken the pattern of visits.
The iron doors to her cell opened and a man walked in. This wasnât a mage. He was a big man but old, with a long salt and pepper beard and a face filled with wrinkles and scars. He wore black and grey leathers and had a large double-bladed axe on his hip. The man squatted down to look at Ava. It seemed like forever before he said a word. âDo you know where you are?â
Ava shook her head.
The man continued his questions. âYour friend, Nathan. What does he look like?â
Nathan? How did this man know about Nathan? Why was he asking about him? âWho?â said Ava, nervous and dreading to know why he was looking for her Nathan.
The man smiled, yellowed and missing teeth gave the man a somewhat feral look. âDonât play with me. You were in and out of consciousness for days when you first arrived. We know all about the attack on Balthazar and how he transported you here. I know about Nathan and your little sister Rose. I know much about you, but now I want you to tell me about Nathan Stoneblood.â
Again, Ava shook her head. She didnât know why this man was asking about Nathan, but she knew he was evil. His beady and sunken eyes were studying her body in a way that sent shivers down her spine. And the hate that spewed from his voice as he said Nathanâs name was unmistakable. Ava tried to reach out to Nathan using their magical connection, but she felt nothing.
âAh, you are trying to contact young Nathan? Good, good,â said the man with a crooked grin. âAlas, your magical powers have been blocked. The only way you could use magic to talk to Nathan is if he were in this very cell. But donât you worry, soon enough you will have some of your powers back. I want you to speak to Nathan. I want him to know exactly what is happening to you.â
Tears started coming down Avaâs face. She felt helpless and alone and this man was so evil. âWhy are you doing this?â she yelled.
âSilly child. Isnât it obvious by now? I want to hurt the Stoneblood boy.
